The timeline is closing to give comment on draft zoning maps for Seattle's Comprehensive Plan Update. This is a critical opportunity to shape how our city can grow, add more housing, and address climate change over the next 20 years. The draft zoning map is a major improvement over the current status quo. It allows for middle housing types like fourplexes citywide, allows for more mixed-use multifamily homes near transit in areas like Upper Queen Anne, Upper Fremont, and Greenwood, and creates new Neighborhood Centers throughout the city.

By December 20, please customize and send the message below. NIMBYs are already mobilizing to limit new housing and keep neighborhoods frozen in amber. Seattle faces an unprecedented housing affordability crisis. Our neighbors are being priced out of the city and, as a resident, I see firsthand how the lack of affordable housing options affects our city. Current restrictions on housing development have contributed to this crisis. Our zoning has constrained housing supply while demand continues to grow. This particularly impacts young families, seniors, and essential workers. The One Seattle Plan is a major opportunity to create a more affordable, equitable, and sustainable city, with reforms to allow for more homes in more places. I want to thank you for a revised plan that makes meaningful and important steps to allow for more housing throughout the city. In particular, I am glad you have proposed: -Allowing middle housing like fourplexes citywide. -Creating 30 Neighborhood Centers. -Expanding Urban Centers around transit. However, I urge you to go further. To create the abundant housing Seattle needs, the Final Plan should: -Allow for stacked flats everywhere near frequent transit, as an accessible alternative to townhomes. -Add new neighborhood centers near major parks, like North Broadway, Seward Park, Alki, Gas Works, and Loyal Heights. -Expand the proposed neighborhood center boundaries, to ensure they are big enough to support grocery stores and other essential uses. -Allow for more mixed-use development, especially along transit arterials. -Allow for multifamily homes on side streets near frequent transit. -Expand the affordable housing density bonus program citywide. I believe these recommendations will help create a more affordable Seattle where residents can access opportunities and meet daily needs close to home. The One Seattle Plan is a critical opportunity to address our housing crisis - we need to ensure it delivers meaningful change.
