(How in tarnation are we already halfway through 2026?!)
Summer is here, and boy, are we excited for some sunshine☀️. With more daylight comes more Seattle residents using public transit to access all the amazing wonders our city has to offer, so why not talk about the magic of transit-oriented development (TOD)! For this month's happy hour, Futurewise and the CCC are collaborating with our friends at Habitat for Humanity (King and Kittitas County) who have been making huge strides in their transit-oriented development work in the Rainier Valley. Just as huge is the fact that Habitat will be covering drinks for this event!
Come learn about how Habitat for Humanity has been literally and figuratively building up communities across King County, and how our coalitions advocacy efforts can help bolster more TOD across all parts of Seattle! Grab a drink, cheers your neighbors, and come celebrate with the Complete Communities Coalition as we fight for more homes, of more types, in more places, for more people.
We hope to see you there!
Date: Wednesday, June 24th, 2026
Time: 6-7:30pm
Location: Columbia City (exact location TBD)
Habitat is creating permanently affordable homeownership directly within transit-rich neighborhoods in Seattle, using a combination of transit investment, surplus public land, zoning reform, and state housing legislation. In the next few years, Habitat will offer more than 160 new homes near transit for first-time homebuyers. These Transit-Oriented Developments are located throughout the Rainier Valley, and Habitat is currently accepting applications for the first 58 homes at Liberty Commons next to the Columbia City Light Rail Station.
Whether you have been following the drawn-out comprehensive plan progress or you're just now learning about it, all are welcome to join partners of the Complete Communities Coalition (CCC) for our monthly Comp Plan Happy Hour events! These in-person events are a great opportunity to meet new people, get connected to the CCC community, learn more about our city's Comprehensive Plan and how you can help make an impact.
We are in the middle of a housing crisis in Seattle, with about 144,000 new homes needing to be built by 2040 to meet our growing population. We're also in the midst of a climate crisis, and adding more housing to Seattle could potentially lower our greenhouse gas emissions to 50% below the national average. How? By having a strong public transit system and 15-minute walkable communities, we could dramatically lessen our dependence on cars, making our communities healthier and more vibrant.
