Subject: Fund Implementation of the Urban Tree Canopy Policies

Message:

I urge the council to fully fund the Urban Tree Canopy Policies during the 2027-29 budget cycle. Residential and commercial development in our urban growth areas will continue during these two years, which will defeat the purpose of the policies. We need to ensure that trees – existing and newly-planted – will provide a tree canopy that will benefit everyone now and in the future. Having trees in our urban growth area communities is very important to me. We must stop the practice of clearcutting all our land for large residential subdivisions and commercial buildings. The policies need full funding for implementation because: 1. Costs will only increase in two years and will be even more difficult for the county to agree to fund the implementation. 2. The Growth Management Act mandates that these policies be implemented in 5 years; waiting 2 years to consider funding will only keep things as they are and will continue to hurt our urban growth areas, our environment and water quality and our quality of life. 3. Trees provide so many benefits to our homes, neighborhoods and communities. We must end the practice of clearcutting every inch of green land for development. The County needs funding to provide for timely implement of the urban tree canopy policies and program. Thank you for your consideration of this important issue.
