Tell the Appropriations Committee to support HB 1099

The bill we have been working on with Representative Duerr to add planning for climate change to the GMA, HB1099, is currently in the House Appropriations Committee. This committee will decide whether/how to fund this bill and ultimately determine its fate. We must ensure that the committee decides to move HB 1099 to the House Floor for a vote before the February 22nd cut-off. We need your help to encourage the legislators who sit on the Appropriations Committee to do everything in their power to ensure jurisdictions are:

Addressing the adverse impacts of climate change (i.e. wildfires, sea-level rise, flooding, landslides, the heat island effect) on people, property, and ecological systems by planning for climate resiliency and mitigation;
Making plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled to help meet state goals for reduction. This would apply to only the 10 largest and fastest-growing counties in Washington.

Message:

I am writing as a concerned citizen to urge you to support HB1099 this legislative session. This is an important piece of legislation that would update the state’s Growth Management Act to add a Climate Change goal that would ensure that jurisdictions are: 1) Addressing the adverse impacts of climate change (i.e. wildfires, sea-level rise, flooding, landslides, the heat island effect) on people, property, and ecological systems by planning for climate resiliency and mitigation; 2) Making plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled to help meet state goals for reduction. This would apply to only the 10 largest and fastest-growing counties in Washington. From wildfires and drought to flooding and sea-level rise, we know that we need to take action in the next 10 years to secure a climate-resilient future for Washingtonians from Aberdeen to Walla Walla and the many rural towns and big cities we are proud to call home. But right now, Washington’s biggest counties aren’t planning adequately for climate change. By passing HB 1099, state legislators can ensure that our cities reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, and protect communities and natural resources from the accelerating impacts of a changing climate. This update will support Washington’s biggest counties as they plan for a resilient future. This bill is currently in the Appropriations Committee. As a member of that committee, I encourage you to do everything that you are able to do to ensure that this legislation is passed out of committee by February 22nd. This is our last chance to update the Growth Management Act to address climate change before some of our largest counties undergo their next comprehensive plan updates. We do not have any more time to waste.
